How To Tie Your Ties Correctly

Google recently compiled it’s list of the most searched terms and in it’s “How to” section, “How to tie a tie” ranked number 1. There are different knots that you need to use for different occasions and most men only know one.

The Four-In-Hand Tie Knot

Do you remember when you were at school and you had to wear a tie to complete your uniform?

Well unless you had a clip on tie, many of you will have worn a four-in-hand knot also known as the schoolboy knot.

This is the easiest knot to learn because of its simple style and is the knot most men know.

Britain’s favourite spy, James Bond only wore this knot and in chapter 25 of From Russia With Love, he has this to say on other knots. “It was tied with a Windsor knot.

Bond mistrusted anyone who tied his tie with a Windsor knot. It showed too much vanity – “It was often the mark of a cad.”

How to tie a Four-In-Hand Knot

Drape the tie around your neck. The wide end extending around 12 inches below the narrow end of the tie.

Cross the wide part of the tie over the narrow end and turn the wide end back underneath the narrow end.

Continue wrapping the wide end around the narrow end by bringing it across the front of the narrow end again. Then pull the wide end up and through the back of the loop.

Hold the front of the tie knot with your index finger and bring the wide end down through the front knot.

Tighten the knot carefully to the gills by holding the narrow end and sliding the knot up. Finally centre the knot to complete the sight.

The Half-Windsor Tie Knot

The half-Windsor knot is seen as the more modern knot and is a symmetrical triangle knot, but it is smaller than it’s big brother the Windsor Knot. It is more suitable for wider ties made from lighter fabrics.

How to tie a Half-Windsor Knot

Start by draping the tie around your neck. The wide end again extending around 12 inches below the narrow end of the tie.

Cross the wide part of the tie over the narrow end and bring the wide end around and behind the narrow end.

Bring the wide end up and pull it down through the hole between your collar and tie before bringing the wide end around the front, over the narrow end from right to left.

Bring the wide end up back through the loop again and pull the wide end down through the knot in front.

Tighten the necktie knot and centre it with both hands to finish.

The Windsor Tie Knot

 

This knot is used for the most formal of occasions whether that is weddings, business meetings or job interviews. It displayed a sense of confidence that is needed in those situations. It is a wide, symmetrical triangle knot.

How to tie a Windsor Knot

To tie this more formal knot, start like all the others by draping the tie around your neck. The wide end around 12 inches below the narrow end of the tie.

Cross the wide part of the tie over the narrow end, bringing the wide end of the tie up through the hole between your collar and the tie and pulling it down toward the front.

Bring the wide end behind the narrow end and to the right. Pull the wide end back through the loop again. You should have a triangle now.

Wrap the wide end across the front of the triangle by pulling the wide end from right to left and bring the wide end up through the loop a third time. Pull the wide end through the knot in front.

Tighten the knot and centre it with both hands.
