What fabric should you make your tie from?

At some point in our lives, we have all had to wear a tie. It’s the personification of being a British Gentleman. We wore them at school. We wore them when interviewing for our first job. We wore them for the weddings and funerals we’ve attended. We wear them when we conduct business. Ties are an integral part of British fashion and our personal fashion.

This means then when designing your own unique tie, you have to be careful about what material you make it from.

Silk is one of the most expensive and most sophisticated choices of tie fabrics. It is known to be a ‘seasonal’ fabric, as it can be worn for all seasons and for all occasions. Despite it being on the expensive side, silk is still a widely popular tie fabric choice because of its high-class feel. It’s a choice for those special times, maybe if you were going to a wedding or if you were a member of a club then silk if the material to make your tie a high-class unique item.

Satin is a type of fabric that can be made from any fibre that has a long filament, like nylon, polyester and silk. Weaving any of those fabrics together using a ‘satin weave’ creates this. The result is a fabric that is smooth and glossy on one side, and dull and matte on the other. Satin ties make for a beautiful accent to a nice suit and can look as luxurious as silk. Be careful though, as any snags on the fabric can stand out quite clearly due to the smoothness and shininess of the fabric.

Polyester is one of the more affordable types of tie fabrics, and it is also more durable than other fabrics. Due to its toughness, polyester is the perfect choice for ties that are going to be worn by children, like school ties. Compared to silk, polyester ties can withstand more rough activities without sustaining too much damage. Polyester ties though feel kind of stiff to the touch, but nevertheless, they make a good fabric option for lively children.

Cotton is the best material for summer. The material is lightweight and versatile making it the most comfortable choice for when you are outdoors in the warm weather this summer. If you were someone who wishes to experiment with styles and colours then a cotton tie would be an excellent choice for you.

Wool is for those times of year when your neck feels cold. With the winter winds rushing down your neck, you’ll want a fabric that can keep you warm. And don’t worry if it rains, because most wool ties are known for being waterproof, meaning that you can wear it without worrying about the damage. A wool tie also has an advantage of having a modest look meaning it can be worn at both casual and formal events.
