How to Clean Silk Ties

How to Clean Silk Ties

Club ties are a great way to distinguish your club or business from another. This is increasingly important for events.

The most popular material used for club or business ties is silk. This is because it is a high quality, comfortable and luxurious material.

You must be careful around food or possible staining materials when you are wearing silk ties, but if your tie does come into contact with a lot of dirt; here’s how you can fix it:

Do Not Try To Clean Silk with Water

The worst thing you could possibly do when coming into contact with a stain is to try and clean it off with water.

Silk is a very delicate material and water can damage the fibres. Trying to clean with water can add to the stain what is called a ‘water stain’ which can be quite tricky to remove.

When the stain does occur, wipe off any excess with a dry cloth and then wait till you can clean the rest properly.

For Some Silks, Dry-Cleaning is recommended

Your silk tie may need dry cleaning, so check with the tie provider before you attempt wash the tie yourself.

Use Rubbing Alcohol on Your Tie

Rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol is useful on non-greasy foods and liquids. But you need to have a hairdryer –or something similar- at hand.

Here’s how to clean your tie with rubbing alcohol:

  1. Dampen a piece of cloth with rubbing alcohol then firmly blot the cloth onto the stain until it is removed.
  2. Immediately dry the stain with a hairdryer.
  3. Repeat this process for more stubborn stains.

Talcum powder can be used to soak up excess grease if the stain is proving to be harder to remove.

  1. Blot the stain with a dry cloth until all excess ifs removed.
  2. Then, lay a clean and dry towel on a flat surface and put your tie on top.
  3. Now, sprinkle talcum powder over the stain.
  4. Leave over night
  5. The following morning/day, use a clean, dry cloth to remove the powder
  6. If the stain has not been removed, repeat the process until it is completely gone.
