Tie Manufacturing

Traditionally, ties are created by weaving a design into polyester or silk fabric. There are a wide range of different weaves and you can find out more about these here. However, with the evolution of new technologies, we also have the option to print your design onto your choice of fabric, which will support more detailed designs and crisper images.

Here’s a brief overview of the types of fabric and manufacturing options that we offer so you can choose the best fit for your own bespoke tie. We know that with so much choice you may wish to speak to our team of experts about your requirements and to discuss the best manufacturing process for your tie.

Why choose James Morton?

Silk ties are a classic choice for customers wishing to create a sleek and sophisticated piece of high-quality neckwear. Silk ties tend to be kept for special events and for occasional use to maintain their fine appearance. Our silk ties come in two different finishes – woven and printed. The choice usually depends on the design, pattern and colours you wish to have on your custom-made silk tie.

Silk woven ties: A silk woven tie is a quintessentially British choice, worn by clubs, societies, teams and regiments for many decades. The fine silk thread offers a superior shine as well as a classic texture and handle. If you’d like a logo or a motif on your tie, this can be jacquard woven into the silk fabric. Our expert weavers can create bespoke designs and patterns to a fine level of detail.

Silk printed ties: If you’re looking for a lighter weight piece of neckwear, you may wish to choose a printed silk tie. As well as being suitable for smaller knots, the crisp, dry handle and lighter fabric make them an appealing option. We offer both dye-printed and digitally-printed silk ties. Dye-printed silk ties are made by dying plain fabrics using large screens that can be used to achieve vibrant colours and large areas of fine detailing. Digitally printed silk ties are manufactured using a specialist printing machine, which can also achieve high levels of detail and add depth to your customised design.

Polyester ties are a good choice for schools, corporations and organisations intending to wear ties daily or regularly – and to achieve a strong “uniform” look. Polyester is a cheaper option than silk and is longer lasting and more durable when worn frequently, hence it being a better choice for more regular use. Polyester ties have come far in the past few years and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques mean that polyester is no longer a cheap, synthetic looking fabric but a viable alternative to silk. Our polyester ties come in two different finishes – woven and printed. The choice will usually depend on the design, pattern and the colours you wish to have on your custom-made polyester tie.

Polyester woven ties: A polyester woven tie is a versatile and reliable choice for day-to-day wear. Stripes and logos can be easily woven into the fabric making it a great option for schools and clubs. Our expert weavers can create bespoke designs and patterns in the finest of detail, showing off your club colours or logo at their very best.

Polyester printed ties: Printed polyester ties are a popular and cost-effective option for uniformed staff such as the police, security firms, transport drivers and guards. We can supply cabin crew and other service industries that may require bright and easily matched company or brand colours. We offer both dye-printed and digitally-printed options. Dye-printed polyester ties are made by dying plain fabrics using large screens that can be used to achieve vibrant colours and large areas of fine detailing. Digitally printed polyester ties are manufactured using a specialist printing machine, which can also achieve high levels of detail and add depth to your custom design.

Our eco ties are an environmentally friendly option matching the same high-quality product as our standard polyester ties, but made using recycled plastic bottles. Just one of our eco ties will save two plastic bottles from going to landfill and polluting the planet. Standard polyester is made using natural oil, so the use of recycled plastic polyester is more ecological than extracting and processing raw materials – with less energy used.

Most importantly the quality and durability of the tie material is not compromised in any way and our eco ties offer the same qualities as standard polyester. They can also be customised with the same colours and finishes – see the ‘Polyester Ties’ tab above for the various woven and printed options available.
