As well as traditional silk and polyester, we also offer a sustainable eco-friendly tie option made with yarn produced from recycled plastic bottles.

Tie Manufacturing

Traditionally, ties are created by weaving a design into polyester or silk fabric. There are a wide range of different weaves and you can find out more about these here. However, with the evolution of new technologies, we also have the option to print your design onto your choice of fabric, which will support more detailed designs and crisper images.

Here’s a brief overview of the types of fabric and manufacturing options that we offer so you can choose the best fit for your own bespoke tie. We know that with so much choice you may wish to speak to our team of experts about your requirements and to discuss the best manufacturing process for your tie.

Why choose James Morton?

Silk Ties

Silk ties are a classic choice for customers wishing to create a sleek and sophisticated piece of high-quality neckwear. Silk ties tend to be kept for special events and for occasional use to maintain their fine appearance. Our silk ties come in two different finishes – woven and printed. The choice usually depends on the design, pattern and colours you wish to have on your custom-made silk tie.

Silk woven ties

A silk woven tie is a quintessentially British choice, worn by clubs, societies, teams and regiments for many decades. The fine silk thread offers a superior shine as well as a classic texture and handle. If you’d like a logo or a motif on your tie, this can be jacquard woven into the silk fabric. Our expert weavers can create bespoke designs and patterns to a fine level of detail.

Silk printed ties

If you’re looking for a lighter weight piece of neckwear, you may wish to choose a printed silk tie. As well as being suitable for smaller knots, the crisp, dry handle and lighter fabric make them an appealing option. We offer both dye-printed and digitally-printed silk ties. Dye-printed silk ties are made by dying plain fabrics using large screens that can be used to achieve vibrant colours and large areas of fine detailing. Digitally printed silk ties are manufactured using a specialist printing machine, which can also achieve high levels of detail and add depth to your customised design.

Polyester ties

Polyester ties are the practical choice for schools, corporations and any organisation that needs ties worn daily. They hold up to regular use far better than silk, cost less, and deliver the consistent “uniform” look most teams are after. Modern manufacturing has moved polyester a long way from the cheap, synthetic fabric it used to be- today it’s a genuine alternative to silk for everyday wear. We produce polyester ties in two finishes, woven and printed; which you choose comes down to the design, pattern and colours you have in mind.

Polyester woven ties:

are a versatile, hard-wearing option built for day-to-day use. Stripes and logos are woven directly into the fabric, which makes them a strong choice for schools and clubs wanting their colours and crest shown off properly. Our weavers can reproduce bespoke designs in fine detail, so even intricate logos come through cleanly.

Polyester printed ties:

cost-effective option for uniformed and service teams — police, security firms, transport drivers, guards and cabin crew — where bright, accurately matched brand colours matter. We offer two methods. Dye-printed ties use large screens to achieve vibrant colours across broad areas of detail, while digitally printed ties use a specialist machine for sharper detail and added depth. Both reproduce your custom design exactly.

Eco ties

Our eco ties give you the same quality and durability as our standard polyester ties, but made from recycled plastic bottles rather than virgin material. Each tie saves two plastic bottles from landfill. Because standard polyester is produced from natural oil, using recycled plastic avoids the energy and raw-material extraction that process demands — a more sustainable choice with no compromise on the finished tie.

You can customise eco ties with the same colours, woven and printed finishes as our standard polyester range — see the ‘Polyester Ties’ tab above for the full set of options.

Corporate Ties FAQs

Woven ties have the design built into the fabric on a loom, giving a richer texture and a more durable, traditional finish. Printed ties have the design applied to the surface, which allows finer detail, more colours and complex artwork. Woven suits stripes, crests and heritage designs; printed suits detailed logos and photographic imagery.

Silk is best for formal, occasional wear — it offers a superior shine and soft handle, ideal for club, society and regimental ties kept for special events. Polyester is the better choice for daily or uniform wear, as it’s more durable, longer lasting and more cost-effective when worn regularly. Schools and corporate teams usually choose polyester; clubs and regiments often prefer silk.

Polyester is the most durable option for everyday use and stands up well to frequent wear, which is why it’s the standard choice for schools, corporate uniforms and service teams. Silk is finer and more delicate, so it’s better suited to occasional formal wear rather than daily use.
